When It comes to Memorial Day weekend of 18’, two artists dropped anticipated albums. One being Pusha T with “Daytona” an the other being A$AP Rocky putting out highly anticipated album “Testing”.
With time everything plays its course, an in true fashion Push made it clear he’s not done when it comes to Drake’s “Two Birds, One Stone”. Leaving some to believe “Daytona” is a response to the later released joint “Duppie Freestyle” by Drake. “Duppie freestyle”, a joint made by Drake in response to Pusha T’s “Infrared”. Most leave off the facts that stand when it comes to “Daytona” executivly produced by Kanye West, being that it’s been mixed and mastered by the hands of the greatest,Through Ye’ of course.
Beyond all of the hype an the he say she say, Pusha T just released his most solid solo body of art. With high anticipation for “King Push”, the last minute change of title was flawless. Breaking down barriers of giving material titles and the boundaries of release dates as well. Some may say Beyoncé created the unknown release date, but no matter what it shows and produces more than lackluster publicity behind an album release. When it comes to “Daytona” it’s clear its nothing short of quality like Jay-Z’s “4:44”, which reaches its 1 year mark within this period of time.
With singles like “What would Meek do” by Pusha T, Drizzys latest single “I’m Upset”, Beyonce & Jay Z’s “Ape Shit” with co production from The Migos & Pharrell. Childish Gambino with “This is America”, & A$AP Rocky’s “Praise the lord” leading the Hip Hop charts. It’s clear the the supply of music is on an all time high.
Following the release of “Daytona” and then the later released “Ye” by Kanye it was still clear that Drake was still not to reply. And at that point I couldn’t blame him, to much at stake or maybe other things took his time? Within the month of June after “Ye” , “K$G” with Kid Cudi, “Nasir” by Nas, & “K.T.S.E” by Teyanna Taylor. And a flawless surprise album from The Carters titled “EVERYTHING IS LOVE” dropped, there was a week and some change time from the release of Drake’s “Scorpion” Album.
With the masses consuming so much new and anticipated music in such a small period of time, they knew it was a monumental time in HipHop. With those stand out albums came other albums like Jay Rock’s “Redemption” & Juice WRLD’s “Goodbye & Good Riddance” which are leading the charts as well. It’s no doubt that 2018’s first an second quarters releases held it down for a dope summer it has been.
June 28th was a interesting day, following the death of murdered up and coming artist XXXTentacion, the visual for his lead single “Sad” dropped. Kicking off black twitter at 9am, it was a refreshing but yet a morbid portrayal of a slain 20 year olds life. With trials come tribulations, things of course carried on. Normal shit like Supreme Court justice Anthony Kennedy retired and LGBT rights were strengthened. For what is was worth folks already knew what they were doing come midnight. It’s 11:54ish an you see a link to the Apple Music that reads “Scorpion” you click it an you don’t even know what your tapping into. It’s the album an “Survival” starts, for consumption purposes it’s a lot to dive into the intro. However within the first part of the “A Side” we learn so much, like the fact that Drake feels betrayed by Kanye and also that Adonis is in great spirits via “Emotionless”. And in true fashion on “Sandra Rose” Aubrey confesses his love and appreciation for his life as well as Sandy & Dennis. “Side B” hits you off rip with soulful sounds from PartyNextDoor, an you already know you just tapped into “Take Care 2”. June 29th is in full effect, Gemini season is over an it feels like July 1st so fast by the time you hear “Summer Games” then “Jaded” , “Ratchet Happy Birthday” & “In my feelings” the summer vibe was back like that!! When everyone saw the Michael Jackson feature they freaked, but anticipated too much, thinking it was a “Billie Jean” sample. But it’s nothing like that, it’s actually unreleased Mike. Only Drizzy can pull that off in 2018 as well as get the hottest or maybe only Hov feature this year. “Scorpion” is now doing 10 million streams a hour via Spotify.
With that being said it’s clear to always have a winning team behind your music An not your life. After all this music dropped I knew I could keep going with it an have a close with what was to come. An all in all Drake dropped an had no diss track back to Pusha T, an it’s respected on both parties. From Kanye’s album to “The Carter’s” albums it’s clear everything takes time to heal. As we all will do with the amount of music that has been given in the past month or so. From Memorial Day weekend to July 4th weekend’s worth of Music, let’s enjoy the time we have and Celebrate.
